1970's Tanzanite and diamond ring. 9.88 Carat oval cabochon bezel set Tanzanite center stone. Mounted in a 14k white gold X style setting with 8 princess cut accent diamonds along the shank and 46 round cut diamonds also along the shank and X design shoulders. The tanzanite has an excellent translucent glow with deep blue and purple hues.
The gemstone was given the name 'tanzanite' by Tiffany & Co. after Tanzania, the country in which it was discovered. The scientific name of "blue-violet zoisite" was not thought to be sufficiently consumer friendly by Tiffany's marketing department, who introduced it to the market in 1968.
