Two Eras, One Lineage

So alike that even experts can struggle to tell them apart — and together, the forbearers of Art Deco.

1837 – 1901

The Victorian Era

Queen Victoria took the throne in 1837 at just eighteen, and did not hand the reins to her son Edward until 1901. Three distinct design styles marked the beginning, middle and end of her 63-year reign — from romantic, nature-inspired motifs to bold, grand statements and, later, delicate aesthetic work.

The Edwardian Era

Under Edward, the style elements largely remained — but grew more refined and symmetrical. Pearls and diamonds took centre stage, and a budding affection for platinum allowed for lace-like, garland settings. Together with the late Victorian style, they are the forbearers of Art Deco.

A Style That Evolved for Eighty Years

From Victoria's coronation to the eve of Art Deco, four distinct chapters of design.

  1. 1837 · Romantic

    The early Victorian style

Sentimental, nature-inspired motifs — hearts, flowers, serpents and lockets — most often in warm yellow gold, echoing Victoria's love for Prince Albert.

  2. 1860 · Grand

    The mid-Victorian style

Bolder, larger statement pieces, solemn mourning jewelry in jet and onyx, and a fashionable taste for archaeological revival.

  3. 1885 · Aesthetic

    The late-Victorian style

Lighter, more delicate designs — stars, crescents and diamonds set with a new sense of restraint.

  4. 1901 · Edwardian

    The age of platinum

Symmetry, pearls and diamonds in lace-like platinum garland settings — the elegant prelude to Art Deco.
